The decision to have a VBAC The arguments for and against a VBAC

The decision to have a VBAC The arguments for and against a VBAC

The arguments for and against a VBAC

Up until recent years, planning a VBAC has been a controversial choice. Arguments about whether it was 'safe' or not (as well as the added convenience of a Caesarean) often lead caregivers to just recommend a repeat Caesarean for non-medical reasons.

Whether you choose to have a repeated Caesarean birth or plan to have a VBAC, there are arguments for and against both options. As the woman (and her partner) it is up to you to consider the possible complications and risks associated with each choice and consider how you personally feel about either alternative.

From a medical perspective, it is now widely recognised that after considering the benefits and risks associated with both options, VBAC should be encouraged but the parent's choice to have a repeated Caesarean should be respected. Ideally your choice should be accepted and supported by your chosen caregiver.
