Emotional considerations for parents

Emotional considerations for parents

Aside from the emotions, and behaviour, of the siblings there are many things that parents must contend with. Many parents know how much they love their child, but wonder how they can fit another into their hearts. It is hard to envisage you being able to love another with the depth you feel for the child you have. Believe us, it will happen, and sibling interaction is entertainment in itself!

Be aware that as the mother, it is normal to be very protective of the new baby. This is not to say that you do not love your other child, but you should be aware of not letting your older child feel this is the case. Also, be aware that your partner needs to bond with the new baby as well. Some partners feel their time is totally consumed with occupying the older child, and they hardly get to spend any time with the new baby. It can sometimes be a juggling act, to meet everyone's needs.

It is a common observation for parent's to note 'how grown up' the older child seems, since the birth of the new baby. For some parents it can be a bit of a grieving process, as they come to terms with their 'baby' not being the baby any more.
