What to buy

What to buy

If you choose to bottle feed your baby from birth, you will need to find out if your hospital will provide your formula (or ask your caregiver). If you do need to provide your own formula milk, make sure you purchase a formula designed specifically for newborn babies. These are normally labelled as 'suitable from birth'. You can read more in types of formula.

Hospital policies in recent years tend to encourage the woman to supply her own formula and perhaps their bottles, teats and sterilising equipment. This is aimed at not promoting a particular brand of formula and facilitating the woman to learn how to prepare the formula milk correctly and sterilise feeding equipment before she goes home (as well as promoting breastfeeding). Many birthplaces will provide the very first bottle of formula after the birth and then the mother is required to prepare her own for subsequent feeds on the postnatal ward. You can read about preparing formula in bottle feeding.

Regardless of whether your hospital supplies formula or not, you will need to have your formula, bottles, teats and sterilising equipment ready for when you go home. Again, don't worry if the formula brand your baby is first given is not the one you have chosen. Most hospitals are supplied with a different brand each month (reflecting that one brand is not better than another) and changing brands is not an issue for your baby
