Genitals

Genitals

Genitals. The genitals of both baby boys and girls will usually appear quite large and swollen in the early days after the birth. This is due to the mother's hormones. If the baby was in a breech position then they could be quite red and swollen from pressing in the cervix in labour and vaginal examinations by caregivers.

For boys the scrotum can look very big and swollen. This is usually due to a normal accumulation of fluid in the sac surrounding the testes and will gradually be absorbed into his body during the first 3 months of life. During development in the womb, the testes form inside of a baby boy’s abdomen. During the last few months of the pregnancy, the testes will descend from the abdominal cavity, down the inguinal canal and into their scrotum. This descent happens under the influence of the hormone testosterone and is completed by birth for up to 98% of boys. The remainder of baby boys will usually have their testes down before their first birthday.

If your baby is a girl her labia and clitoris will also look enlarged and she may have a mucous or bloodstained vaginal discharge in the first few days after the birth. It is normal for girls to have small skin tags around their genitals, which should disappear, as she grows older.
