Wind, colic and reflux - about

Wind, colic and reflux - about

About wind
About colic
About reflux

In the first few months after the birth, most newborn babies will experience times of being unsettled and fussy, often crying on and off for up to a few hours at a time (on most days), or after feeding. Some parents will accept this behaviour as being very normal for their newborn baby (which it can be), or they may feel it is caused by something like wind, colic or reflux. Comments by friends and family will often include mentions of these conditions, or they may be suggested to you by your local doctor, paediatrician or early childhood nurse, particularly if you take your baby for a check up, to find a possible cause for their crying. However, the terms of 'wind', 'colic' and 'reflux' are often used interchangeably and therefore it can be hard to know what any of them actually mean and if they are the definite cause, or if you should be concerned enough to do anything about them.

The following information explores the issues surrounding the possible conditions of wind, colic and reflux.
