Your caregiver and your baby on the first day

Your caregiver and your baby on the first day

What to expect from your caregiver for your baby will depend on their health and well being. In most cases the baby will be fit and well, needing very little ongoing observations. In some cases the baby will be in good health, but may have some predisposing 'risk factors', prompting the caregiver to recommend some routine observations for the first day or so. Occasionally the baby will be unwell and need to transfer to the Intensive Care Nursery.

The immediate care of your baby as soon as they are born is outlined in 'What to expect from your caregiver'. The section here will go on to look at the care for the baby after this initial attention and any procedures that may be involved once the baby is stabilised. Care of the baby if unwell is dealt with in Intensive Care Nursery.

NOTE: The following information is based on what to expect in an Australian context. If you live in another country the procedures may be slightly different.
