Causes of varicose veins

Causes of varicose veins

What some women do for varicose veins

Varicose veins in the legs are generally caused by the blood back- flowing and pooling in the veins of the legs, making them swell into purple / blue bulges. The pregnancy hormone progesterone weakens the walls of the veins, relaxing the valves in the veins so they don't close efficiently. This, combined with the pressure and weight put onto the lower body by the growing baby, will often make varicose veins worse in late pregnancy.

Besides not looking very attractive, varicose veins can make your legs ache and sore, especially if bumped or knocked. This is because the blood is having difficulty pumping the waste products and carbon dioxide away from tissues, causing a build up of toxins in the muscle cells.

Varicose veins should improve (or even disappear) a few months after the birth, but some may remain. It is possible to have them 'stripped' or surgically removed after the birth but most caregivers will advise waiting until after you have had all your children before you do so (in case they come back).
