Anterior lip - what can I do?

Anterior lip - what can I do?

If you are experiencing an anterior lip, resisting the urge to push can sound easier than it actually is. It can take immense focus to go against the natural urge of your body.

However, you could try:

Blowing out (imagine blowing out a candle), panting, yelling or groaning during the contraction, when you have the urge of push.
Changing position to take the pressure off, particularly if you have been in the same position for longer than 2-3 hours. Move into an all fours position, head down and bottom up (knee chest position), you could lie on your side, pelvic rock, or get into the bath, if one is available.
Homoeopathic remedies may be helpful, ask for some to be included in your homoeopathic labour kit.
Acupressure points may help to stimulate the cervix to pull up, and assist you through this time. There are two different points your partner or support person could try. They include:

Buttock points (BL 32)

The buttock point lies just above the buttocks, one finger width either side of the spine. It does not matter which side you use. When the person feels this point with their finger, they should be able to feel a small depression where the point lies. Many labouring woman will direct the person performing the acupressure, because when the thumbs are in the correct place they usually 'feel right'.

The person will usually apply strong pressure with their knuckles during a contraction. The person may also pant with her, to help her resist the urge to push. The panting needs to be slow, so she does not hyperventilate (but similar to blowing out a candle).

Buttock point (BL32 Image 4-10 shows the location of the buttock point to help with an anterior lip.
