Some women will seek out natural therapies to help them with their postnatal depression. These are probably more appropriate for women experiencing mild to moderate depression, or combining them with other approaches or treatments.
NOTE:It is important to seek further medical help if your natural therapies are not working. Always tell your doctor and natural health practitioner(s) about other medications/treatments you are taking to ensure they do not interact with each other and reduce their effectiveness. Only stop (or reduce) prescibed medications for depression under medical supervision. If you feel strongly about reducing or ceasing your medications, seek the advice of your doctor. Seek a second opinion if your doctor is not supportive, rather than attempting to do this on your own.
Therapies thought to help, or prevent postnatal depression can include:
Diet. Eating fish high in omega oils (such as fresh swordfish, tuna and salmon). Zinc is also believed to be beneficial. Check with your caregiver.
Herbal. St John's Wort, an extract from the plant Hypericum perforatum, has been shown to be effective for treating mild to moderate depression. See your herbalist.
Aromatherapy. Aromatherapists may recommend essential oils such as Bergamot, Neroli or Ylang ylang. Consult your aromatherapist.
Homoeopathy. Your homoeopath may prescribe remedies specific to your individual physical and emotional signs.
