Preparations to avoid

There are a few natural therapies that some women find are helpful for their thrush. Check with your caregiver or practitioner before using them. Avoid putting anything into the vagina if your waters have broken or there are any pregnancy complications (for example bleeding).

To acidify the vagina and discourage the growth of candida, some women will try:

Using Aci-Jel vaginal gel (or something similar). This is a non-medicated acidifying gel purchased from chemists. It is inserted with an applicator into the vagina until a couple of days after the thrush has cleared.
Soaking a tampon in one cup of water with one teaspoon of cider or white vinegar and inserting it into the vagina for 10 minutes, 2-3 times per day. Inserting an actual fresh clove of peeled garlic.

To replace the normal bacillus bacteria in the vagina some women will:

Put natural yoghurt with Acidophilus into the vagina or
Put Acidophilus tablets into the vagina.

To relieve the itchy soreness of the genitals some women will try:

Putting plain yoghurt to the outside genital area.
Applying a poultice of slippery elm bark powder and water, backed with muslin cloth.
Putting ½ a cup of cider vinegar or a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda in the bath.
Aromatherapy. Some aromatherapists will recommend using a few drops of essential oil in a bowel of warm water to sit in. This may include tea tree or bergamot. Essential oils should not be used if you are less than 12 weeks pregnant. Check with your aromatherapist.
Using herbal treatments including slippery elm, Echinacea or walnut hull powder. Consult with your herbalist.
Some homoeopathic remedies can include Cocculus indicus, Kali sulphuricum, or Sepia. See your homoeopath for a remedy.
