Emotional changes - about

Emotional changes - about

'As a woman and man grow into parents, the arrival of their child means a new family is born.'

The first 12 weeks of the pregnancy (also known as the '1st trimester') is often experienced as a roller coaster of emotions at a time of immense physical and emotional adjustment. Many women will notice their feelings coming easily to the surface, often heightened by being physically tired, nauseous (and/ or vomiting), especially during the first few months. It is important to try and look after yourself by resting and sleeping when you can. This can help support your body while it adjusts to the unique process of growing a baby. If you are able to, try and do some nurturing things for just you, like having a massage or taking a break away for a couple of days. This can mark the occasion, make you feel special and perhaps give you some space to think about your new pregnancy.

Acknowledging the pregnancy will normally involve spending some time thinking about what it means for you (and all that goes with it). This may include contemplating the prospects of parenting, changes to your lifestyle and/or relationships and possibly career adjustments, or perhaps considering how you will accommodate a second (or third or more) child into the family. These issues can arise regardless of whether the pregnancy was planned or not, as the idea of having a baby suddenly turns into a reality.

For many women, accepting (or coming to terms with) the pregnancy will usually involve a mixture of positive and negative feelings about accommodating a new person in their lives. Some women will question their readiness to start a family (will there ever be a right time?). Others may focus on their own personal issues and/or family values, as they wrestle with the whole picture of being pregnant.
