Women will approach how they wish to manage their labour pain in different ways. Some will go with an open mind, taking a 'wait and see' approach, before asking for medical pain relief. Others will have preconceived ideas about their 'acceptance' or 'avoidance' of pain relief. A few will not give pain relief a thought, believing they won't need it.
It is hard to know what the labour will bring (even if this is not your first baby). To be able to work effectively with your caregiver(s) and enhance a positive birth experience, it is good to be aware of your options and what is available at your chosen place of birth.
When making choices about pain relief, it is ideal if you are fully aware of the probable effectiveness of each method and the potential side effects that can be possible for both the woman and her baby. It is important to explore these options before the birth, when your mind is clearer, being aware that your decisions can change once in labour. Much of the information we have written is designed to help you make informed decisions about your pain relief. It is better to be aware about your choices than to say, "I wish I had of known about that before I accepted it".
