Examples of birth plans

Examples of birth plans

You may wish to write your birth plan on your own or together with your partner or support person. Some people try the exercise of writing separate birth plans that reveal different needs and wishes, then surprising the other person. You can write separate lists of what is important to you for the labour and birth and then exchange these lists with your partner. Once you have discussed any discrepancies and made any necessary compromises, write a united plan that incorporates both wishes and needs.

Simple and flexible is a good approach when writing a birth plan. Take your time and let it grow and change. Possibly start with a list on the fridge door under the headings of:

No labour - overdue and plans regarding induction.
Prelabour and interventions.
Early 1st phase and interventions.
Active 1st phase and interventions.
2nd Stage and interventions.
3rd Stage and interventions.
Pain relief options.
What if I am transferred?
What if a caesarean is needed or planned for?
Your baby at the birth and plans if needing intensive care or transfer.
Feeding your baby and care in the postnatal period.
Going home.

You can write under the appropriate headings what is important to you during the different phases of labour. Take into consideration your preferences if things don't run smoothly. Your list will probably change and evolve over time.
