About sexually transmitted infections

About sexually transmitted infections

WARNING: You may not want your children to read some topics in this section.

There are many types of sexually transmitted infections (STI's). Some are viral (caused by viruses) and others are bacterial (caused by bacteria). Sexually transmitted infections used to be referred to as 'sexually transmitted diseases' or 'STD's'. The main bacterial infections are covered in this section. However, Syphilis is dealt with in tests during pregnancy. Most of the viral STI's are covered separately in Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, genital warts and genital herpes. Other vaginal infections which are not sexually transmitted are thrush and Gardnerella.
