Condom - male

Condom - male

A male condom is a fine rubber sheath placed over the penis when erect, just prior to intercourse. It prevents semen being released into the woman's vagina. A new condom is needed each time you have sex and spermicide can also be used if you wish.

Condoms can be up to 97% effective if they are put on and taken off correctly and a water-based lubricant is used every time. Before putting on the condom, pinch the end of it with your fingers, so a space is left for semen to be released into. After sex hold the base of the condom before removing the penis from the woman's vagina, so it does not slip off inside her. Wrap the condom in a tissue or toilet paper after use and place it in the bin (not the toilet).

NOTE. Never use oils or Vaseline as lubricants, these can damage the rubber. Store your condoms in a cool place and use before the expiry date.

Side effects. None, unless you are allergic to latex rubber or the water-based lubricant being used (or spermicide, if using this).

Breastfeeding. Male condoms can be used when a woman is breastfeeding, but not with spermicide.

Advantages of condoms are:

Relatively cheap and easy to buy at chemists and supermarkets.
Very effective for protecting against sexually transmitted infections including hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS.
Can be stopped at any time to conceive another baby.
