Condom - female

Condom - female

The female condom is a thin, soft, polyurethane pouch, designed for women of all ages. It is placed inside the vagina, with a flexible ring at each end to keep it in place. Female condoms are up to 95% effective if used correctly. They come pre-packaged with a generous amount of silicone-based lubricant, but extra lubricant can be used if you wish. Some women also use spermicide. A new condom needs to be used each time you have sex. Wrap it in a tissue or toilet paper after use and place in the bin (not the toilet).

NOTE. A female condom cannot be used at the same time as a male condom, as they can make the female condom move and/or the male condom come off.

Side effects. None.

Breastfeeding. Female condoms can be used when breastfeeding, but not with spermicide.

Advantages of female condoms are:

They are available at pharmacies and family planning clinics or by mail order. No need to see a doctor.
They can be used if allergic to latex rubber or water-based lubricants.
Up to 70% of women and their partners like using them. The polyurethane conducts heat and is like a second skin, making sex feel more sensitive and natural for the woman. The man is not constricted with a tightly fitting male condom.
It does not need to interrupt sexual spontaneity if put in beforehand.
They can be used during the woman's menstrual period.
They are highly effective in protecting against sexually transmitted infections, including hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS.
You can stop using them at any time to conceive another baby.
