A physician is a doctor who has completed further qualifications to specialise in treating physical illnesses and health conditions. (Physicians do not perform operations. Doctors who perform operations are known as surgeons). Physicians can treat illnesses that are general in nature (such as high blood pressure) or they may specialise in specific health disorders such as endocrine (diabetes and thyroid), haematology (blood disorders), renal (kidney disorders) or neurological (for example epilepsy). Some physicians will also specialise in caring for pregnant women.
If a woman has a health condition before she conceives, or develops an illness or health condition during her pregnancy she may be seen by a specialist physician (in addition to her maternity caregiver). The physician may be a consultant who visits the public hospital or a visiting specialist nominated by your obstetrician (in a public or private hospital). In most cases, the physician works closely with the maternity caregiver to care for the woman during her pregnancy and after the birth.
