A genetic counsellor is a person who specialises in providing information, counselling and advice to women and their partners relating to the possibilities of conceiving, or giving birth to a child with a genetic disorder or inherited abnormality. Genetic counsellors are usually health professionals (such as doctors or midwives) with counselling qualifications and a special interest in working in this area. Some genetic counsellors have completed specific courses or degrees in genetics and they are required to maintain ongoing education to keep up to date with the latest research developments and statistics. In Australia, genetic counsellors usually have specialist training in genetics and counselling and are certified by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA).

Most large public maternity hospitals employ a genetic counsellor as part of their pregnancy services, or the genetic counsellor may provide their services through their own private practice.

When a genetic counsellor sees a woman (or a couple) they take into consideration their medical and family histories, previous pregnancies and the woman's age to estimate the likely statistical chances of them having a baby with various health conditions. They also provide information about the current medical tests and interventions available to check for genetic disorders. This is aimed at assisting parents in making informed decisions.

You may seek a genetic counsellor, or be referred to one by your caregiver if you:
