What some women find helpful for their nausea and vomiting

What some women find helpful for their nausea and vomiting

If you are feeling unwell, check with your caregiver. If there are no other medical reasons for the nausea and/or vomiting, then you may wish to consider looking at some options to help relieve it. The following is a guide to what some women have found helpful for the nausea or vomiting.

Stress management
Relaxation exercises
Vitamin B6
Sea bands
Herbal treatments
Aromatherapy
Homoeopathy

Stress management. Many women find that stress can be a major cause for their nausea and vomiting. Looking at your stresses, and how you feel about being pregnant, may help you deal with what is going on for you.

You may find that professional counselling is needed to help you work through your issues. This may be particularly beneficial if you are worried about the health of you or your baby. Being worried is a normal response. However, working through your concerns now is probably going to be more effective than ignoring or suppressing them.

Relaxation exercises. Some women find that deep breathing, meditation and/or relaxation exercises are helpful. These do not have to be long and involved, and can be incorporated into everyday life. You can read more in stress and relaxation.

If possible, try to organise some time off from work, or a break from mothering. Have a massage, or look at strategies to take the pressure off. You may wish to revisit the diet and natural therapy strategies used for morning sickness.

Vitamin B6.There is some evidence that vitamin B6 (or pyridoxine) supplements may be helpful for nausea and vomiting. Dosages can vary from 30 to 75 mgs per day. Check with your caregiver. You may wish to read more in vitamins and minerals.

Sea bands. There is an acupressure wrist point (known as PC6). This is the point used for 'sea bands' to help relieve sea-sickness. Sea bands have also been used to successfully treat nausea and vomiting during pregnancy and can be purchased from pharmacies.
