Therapies & treatments

Therapies & treatments

The following are some strategies that other women have found helpful when dealing with their dizziness and fainting during pregnancy. These can include:

Getting up slowly
Avoiding standing in the one spot for prolonged periods of time
Trying to avoid hot environments
Sitting if you feel faint
Drinking plenty of fluids
Eating regularly
Taking care with exercise
Natural therapies

Getting up slowly. If you are moving from a lying position, sit up first for a while before standing. This will allow your body time to adjust to being upright. When standing from a sitting position, get up slowly. But if you start to feel light-headed, or 'see stars', sit again for a while.

Avoiding standing in the one spot for prolonged periods of time. If you need to stand for long periods of time for work or at home, you may find 'isometric exercises' help. These involve briefly contracting (or tensing) the muscles in your calves, thighs and bottom, then relaxing them at frequent intervals, helping the blood to flow around the body (and not pool in the legs).

Trying to avoid hot environments. Hot environments (such as steamy bathrooms and crowded, stuffy rooms) can encourage the blood to flow away from your head. Some women will place a plastic chair in (or near) their shower, just in case they start to feel dizzy. If you are getting up and out of the bath, try to do this slowly. You may want to sit on the side of the bath for a while before you stand. It is generally safer to do this in stages, to avoid falling over.

Sitting if you feel faint. If you do feel faint, sit (or lie) down for a while. You can try putting your head on a high table (if there is one near). Putting your head between your knees (or as low as you can reach) may also help. Some women will get onto their hands and knees if there are no chairs around (if this is possible). Try and have a drink of water and snack before getting up.

Drinking plenty of fluids.
