Caring for twins - birth tips

Caring for twins - birth tips

birthTIPS

The following are a few tips from mothers of twins or more.

Don't worry about bathing every baby each day. Top and tail them or bath then every few days. Milk feeds and a clean nappy are the priorities.
Don't worry if the housework is left undone or dinner is not sitting ready on the table in the evenings. It is enough that your babies are happy and well cared for. Don't feel guilty if you'd rather spend time enjoying your babies instead of vacuuming!
Don't worry if the house isn't looking spic and span and organised, so long as it is functional and meeting your baby care needs. You may have baby equipment in every room, but this will save legwork and minimise the need to leave the babies to fetch what you need.
Don't get caught up in having separate things for each baby as far as 'germs' go. Twins and other multiples are in such close proximity to each other all the time, their germs are permanently shared!
If your partner is helping, take turns in caring for the babies so that one of you is refreshed.
If you need a shower and your babies are awake, put them in day bouncing chairs and place them in the bathroom with you, so you can chat and see them while you freshen up. The same can be done when doing things in the kitchen (well clear of potentially hot objects) or in the back yard while you hang the washing.
Get out of the house as often as you can. We know this is not easy but the fresh air will be worth the effort. If your babies become more synchronised in their eating and sleeping patterns, this can become easier. Stock your baby bags the night before so you are ready to go when they are. Be prepared to be stopped every few metres by admiring passers by with the usual questions - "And are they identical?" Even if they are obviously a boy and a girl!
