Music

Music

Music (or 'audio-analgesia') has been used to help control pain for dental work, after operations and for children needing medical interventions. It is not as well known that it may help women deal with childbirth. A few small studies have shown positive benefits, suggesting music can help reduce the woman's perception of her labour pain.

Music can act as a method of distraction or have a calming, relaxing or motivating influence on the woman's emotions and her experience of the labour and pain. It can be used to block out distracting or disturbing sounds (such as another woman in labour) and can help with rhythmic breathing patterns and massage strokes. Some women will use music to aid their visualisations or assist in their use of hypnosis.

Music can also facilitate the relaxation and positive attitudes of staff, partners and support people.


Things to consider- music


It may be an idea to make preparations to have some music (even if you don't use it, or don't end up liking it). Many birthplaces will now supply some playing equipment (usually tape or CD). You may wish to:
