Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy

Tissue salts

Homoeopathy was first discovered in the early 1800's, and in recent years has become a popular natural therapy for use during pregnancy, labour and in the postnatal period after the birth. Homoeopathy is based on the principle that 'like cures like', therefore instead of suppressing symptoms, the homoeopathic remedy aims at stimulating them, actively encouraging the body's natural healing process.

The key principles of homoeopathy consist of:

A medicine, which in small doses cures an illness or symptom, but in large doses can produce symptoms of a disease (or worsen the illness).
Through extreme dilution, the medicines' curative properties are believed to be enhanced and all the 'poisonous' or undesirable side effects are lost (or the more dilute the remedy the more 'potent' it is).
Prescribing for the individual person by studying the 'whole person', according to his or her temperament and responses.

Small quantities of substances are usually taken internally, either as drops of liquid in an alcohol base, or as tiny pills under the tongue, to stimulate the body to heal itself.

Homoeopathic remedies come in different strengths. Strengths or potencies of dilution depend on the scale used (for example 'x' or 'c' scale). Remedies will usually come in 6x, 9x, 12x, 24x and 30x or 3c, 6c, 12c, and 30c. Higher dilutions (such as 200 x or c) are more potent, and usually only available when prescribed by a homoeopath. Some of the more common homoeopathic remedies prescribed for labour pain can include:

Aconite
Caulophyllum
Chamomilla
Coffea
Kali Carb
Pulsatilla
Sepia
