Some women will use specific herbs during their labour, not necessarily to address the pain, but to support the woman if she is feeling tired, exhausted or anxious. When women feeling fatigued and / or concerned, they often feel less able to cope with the pain and their perception of it is intensified.
Do not 'self-prescribe' herbs, as they can be quite powerful, and have side effects (just because it is 'natural' doesn't always mean it is 'safe'). Consult with a qualified herbalist during the pregnancy, if you wish to be prepared to use them during your labour.
The herbs here are suggested as a guide to what your herbalist may recommend. They are often infused and taken as a tea, or administered as a tincture (or liquid form) for easier use. Some herbs prescribed for labour can include:
| |
Infusing fresh ginger root alone, or adding raspberry leaf tea with honey to improve stamina and mental awareness. |
Motherwort to help in allaying anxiety and tension. |
Skullcap to help with mental and physical tension, as the level of labour pain increases. |
Ginseng taken to increase vitality and physical performance. Some partners or support people may use this also. |
NOTE: Ginseng should not be taken with caffeine or other stimulants, where there is a history of headaches, or high blood pressure.
