If you are not used to trying different positions for penetrative sex you may need to become inventive and adventurous during pregnancy to achieve intercourse comfortably. As the woman's belly gets bigger, using the missionary position (the partner lying on top of woman) can be a bit tricky, but fine if the man's weight is held off her. The partner will often need a strong upper body to maintain this. Regardless of the partner's ability to stay off her belly, the woman may feel light headed, breathless or have more heartburn if lying flat on her back for a long time, so having a few pillows under her head may help.

Other more comfortable positions can be lying side by side with the partner's front against the woman's back and penetrating the vagina from behind. This may be more comfortable for the woman in late pregnancy as the baby's head engages, as penetration is not so deep and she can control it a little with her buttocks.

Penetrating the vagina from behind can also be achieved with the woman on all fours and the partner kneeling behind her.

Alternatively, the woman can sit or lie on top of her partner, giving her control of the penetration and having her belly free.

There are some aromatherapy essential oils with aphrodisiac properties including ginger, sandalwood and ylang ylang. Check with your caregiver and aromatherapist about burning these (never before 12 weeks of pregnancy).
