Medical treatments

There are a few natural therapies that some women find are helpful. Check with your caregiver or practitioner. Avoid putting anything into your vagina if the waters have broken or there are any pregnancy complications (for example bleeding).

To acidify the vagina and discourage the growth of gardnerella, some women will try:

Using Aci-Jel vaginal gel (or something similar). This is a non-medicated acidifying gel purchased from chemists. It is inserted with an applicator into the vagina until a couple of days after the gardnerella has cleared.
Soaking a tampon in one cup of water with one teaspoon of cider or white vinegar and inserting it into the vagina for 10 minutes, 2-3 times per day. Inserting an actual fresh clove of peeled garlic for a few hours each day.

To replace the normal bacillus bacteria in the vagina some women will:

Putting natural yoghurt with Acidophilus into the vagina or
Puttting Acidophilus tablets into the vagina.

To increase acidity in the system some women will try:

Drinking cranberry juice.

NOTE:Some caregivers advise against putting any yoghurt inside the vagina during pregnancy. This is because some yoghurts could contain the group B streptococcus bacteria. There is no evidence to support or reject this this claim. You can read more in group B strep.

Herbalists may recommend using St John's Wort cream or Yoni powder to the genitals for healing and the odour. Consult your herbalist. Homoeopathic remedies may include Borax Veneta.
