Therapies & treatments

Therapies & treatments

There are a few things that women will try to help with their frequent urination and/or preventing a bladder infection. If you are concerned about having frequent urination or think you have a bladder infection, then contact your caregiver or hospital. During the pregnancy, and after the birth, doing pelvic floor exercises will tend to help with frequent urination.

NOTE: If you develop a fever, back pain, abdominal pain, contraction like pain or blood in the urine you should contact your caregiver or hospital as soon as possible for advice and treatment.

Dealing with urine infections

Preventing urine infections

In an effort to prevent bladder infections some women will:

Wipe their genitals from 'front to back' after passing urine and opening their bowels. Washing their genitals with water and emptying their bladder soon after intercourse.

Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight polyester pants and pantyhose. Bacteria love moist heat trapped in synthetic fibres.

Avoid bubble baths, bath oils and bath salts. These can change the normal acid / alkaline balance of the vagina which can promote bacterial growth.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. This can help keep the bladder flushed and make it less likely for an infection to develop.

Avoid sugary foods, to reduce the chances of having glucose in the urine.

Drink unsweetened Cranberry juice on a daily basis. Some people blend it with parsley. Some women will eat garlic and foods rich in Vitamin C to boost their immune system.
