Emotions crowning phase

Emotions crowning phase

Emotions for the Woman, crowning phase

Frightened as your perineum begins to stretch.
Determined to get the baby out with the next push.
Unable to stop pushing when your caregiver asks you to ‘pant’ or to ‘breathe’.
Wanting to push to get the burning and stretching over with.
Focused and completely aware as you feel your baby leaving your body.
Shock, love, relief as the head emerges and you physically touch your baby for the first time.
Unsure what to do now the head is out but the rest of your baby’s body is still inside your body.
Joy and excitement.
Worried about tearing.
Not wanting anyone to touch your genitals.

Emotions for the partner / support person, crowning phase

Unsure about how the baby looks - a small, wrinkly, purpley-blue head appearing with each contraction and push.
Excited you can see the colour of the hair- or a bald scalp.
Nervous if she is in the bath -Will the baby be all right?
Excited that the baby is coming and you can see what is happening.
Not wanting to look.
Relieved that the end is near.
Uncomfortable or admiring the sheer effort it is taking.
Frightened if she is screaming as the head crowns.
Pain when her fingernails dig into your arm or hand.
Not sure if you can continue, if she is physically using you as support.
