Rubella vaccination

Rubella vaccination

Rubella (or 'German measles') is a mild infectious disease that is capable of causing abnormalities of babies, for women who contract the infection in the first 16 weeks of their pregnancy. A 'Rubella titre' is one of the routine blood tests performed at the first pregnancy visit, to check if the woman has adequate immunity. If the results of this earlier test showed that you were not 'immune', it is usually recommended that you have a Rubella vaccination after the baby is born. This is aimed at providing immunity to the Rubella virus, for any potential future pregnancies, as well as reducing the incidence of Rubella in the community, as a whole.

The Rubella vaccination injection is usually given on the last day in the hospital, just before being discharged home. It can cause some mild symptoms of rubella (fever, rash, joint pain, sore throat, swollen lymph glands) about 1 to 3 weeks after the injection is given, but this is not infectious (therefore it cannot be passed onto anyone else). Pregnancy should be avoided for at least 1 to 2 months after the injection (hence the timing of administering it soon after the birth). Breastfeeding your baby should not be affected by having a Rubella vaccination. You can read more in rubella vaccination.
