Natural therapies

Natural therapies

Some women will use natural therapies to treat their diabetes. However, it is usually important to work in partnership with conventional medical treatments. The aim of the natural therapies is usually to reduce blood sugar levels, help to keep them within the normal range and / or reduce the woman's need for high insulin doses.

Some natural therapies that women may choose can include:

Keeping strictly to the diabetic diet, having daily physical activity and getting enough sleep. Sometimes in combinations with rest and relaxation techniques, massage, acupressure (or acupuncture), meditation, yoga, and counselling if needed.
Taking chromium supplements, check with your caregiver.
Eating immune boosting foods, such as garlic and those rich in vitamin C.
Taking homoeopathic remedies such as Argentum nitricum. See your homoeopath.

NOTE: Fenugreek has been shown to be beneficial but MAY CAUSE UTERINE CONTRACTIONS, therefore should be avoided (unless your caregiver feels that it could be appropriate during the last week or so of the pregnancy).
