How the baby is affected by a cord prolapse, will very much depend on the degree of compression, and the length of time the cord is compressed. If the cord is only partially compressed (or intermittently compressed) the baby may be born without any health problems. If the cord is fully compressed, but it is for less than 8 minutes or so, then the baby will probably need resuscitation at birth, and may have problems due to lack of oxygen. If the cord is fully compressed for more than 8 to 10 minutes, then the baby is unlikely to survive.
