What to avoid
Some women find using natural therapies beneficial. (Check with your caregiver or practitioner.)
Herbal remedies. Some herbalists will suggest eating psyllium husks or seeds, flax seeds, liquorice root or sprinkling slippery elm powder onto the morning cereal. Another is adding a pinch of Cayenne to food. Check with your herbalist.
Aromatherapy. An aromatherapist may suggest Patchouli oil added to carrier oil for a gentle abdominal rub, generally in a clockwise direction above the level of the uterus. (Essential oils should not be used before 12 weeks of pregnancy.) Check with your aromatherapist.
Homoeopathy. There are many remedies that your homoeopath may suggest for your individual condition. See your homoeopath for an assessment.
Medical treatments
If the constipation is causing you pain or discomfort and not improving your caregiver may suggest some occasional treatments for when the constipation is severe. Discuss any concerns you have with your caregiver.
These could include:

A glycerine suppository (without added medications). These can be inserted into the anus and held for 10-20 minutes. This will soften the bowel motion so it is easier to pass.

Fibre and bulking laxatives. These are generally the only recommended laxatives in pregnancy as they tend to stay in the intestine and are not absorbed into the body's system. They usually need to be mixed (or followed) with plenty of water. |
