What you need for bathing

What you need for bathing

About soaps, shampoos and creams

To bathe your baby, essentially you will need warm water, a towel and your baby. The use of soaps, bath foams, creams or oils are a personal choice, but not absolutely necessary. Most caregivers will advocate just using plain water in the early days and perhaps Sorbelene cream or a bath oil to cleanse and moisturise the baby's skin.

Frequent bathing with soaps and perfumed products can be irritating to your baby's skin, drying it out and making it prone to rashes and skin infections. Our society today tends to 'over-clean' our bodies, often obsessed with everything that 'foams or bubbles'. Dermatologists believe that we use too many soaps and cleansers on our body, often aggravating many skin problems, including eczema. This is because the natural oils that protect our skin are removed.

Bear in mind that your newborn baby's skin is quite sensitive and is now suddenly being subjected to a range of chemicals and solutions. In general the rule of 'less is best' is a good one. If you wish to use anything, then a cream or oil is better than soap. Sorbelene and glycerine cream or lotion is probably the best. Although you may prefer to use a plain oil or add a water-dispersible oil to the bath (often used for skin dryness and irritations).

Sorbelene and glycerine cream is an inexpensive and effective cleansing replacement for soaps when bathing.
