'Top and tailing' your baby

'Top and tailing' is an easy way to clean your baby when you don't feel like bathing them. Essentially it is just cleaning your baby's face, bottom and genitals, without fully undressing them. Of course you can undress your baby and sponge their whole body down if you wish (instead of bathing). Just make sure the room and water are warm and you don't take too long (so your baby doesn't become too cold and upset).

'Top and tailing' can be an alternative in the colder months, or a way to clean babies who are initially unsettled with the routine of a full bath. It is also recommended in the first 24 - 48 hours, for baby boys who have been circumcised.

As with a full bath, you will still need to have everything ready and within reach. These can include:

Something to lay your baby on. A change mat, folded towel or sheepskin (with a towel on top). These need to be placed on a surface that is firm and at a height appropriate for you such as a bench, table or change table (helping to avoid unnecessary stretching or twisting of your lower back). Remember if you need to leave the table, take your baby with you. NEVER leave your baby unattended.
Clean nappy changing equipment and clean clothes (if you intend changing them).
A bowl or container of plain warm water.
Cotton wool balls or a clean face washer or flannel.
A towel.
Creams, oils or lotions, if you intend using them.
