Treatments for back pain

Treatments for back pain

Treatments for back pain will usually incorporate good posture and correct lifting techniques, including an awareness of not overdoing things and avoiding overstretching and straining a back that is already sore, or painful. Often the most appropriate treatment is simply resting and taking things easy, until the body has had time to recover from the pregnancy, labour and birth. Physiotherapists can instruct women on appropriate exercises and posture to help strengthen their back and abdominal muscles. Some women have found having treatments with a chiropractor or osteopath helpful for resolving back problems. It may be that the sacrum, or coccyx is misaligned and needs correcting.

Other women try natural therapies for back pain. Check with your therapist to see if they have experience in dealing with women during the postnatal period. Some natural therapies may include:

Massage, shiatsu, the Alexander technique or Bowen technique.
Acupuncture or acupressure.
Herbal Liniments.
Herbal tinctures including St. John's Wort or Scullcap. See your herbalist for advice.
Homoeopathic remedies may include Hypericum Perfoliatum or Arnica for swelling and bruising. See your homoeopath for more detailed information.

If planning a visit to your practitioner, organise for someone to go with you and mind the baby.
