How to introduce a bedtime routine

How to introduce a bedtime routine

Changing your baby’s sleeping habits to something resembling civilized can seem like Mission Impossible but it can be easier than you think. Yes, there may be some tears (hopefully your baby’s and not yours!) but it is possible to introduce a new settling strategy to teach your baby better sleeping habits. You will need assistance from your partner or support person before you begin. Talk through your plan together and make sure that you both understand the outcomes you're working towards.

Begin at a time when you can support each other. You may like to take turns in using the settling strategy. Don't introduce change at a time when consistency may be difficult - when your baby's sick, or when you and your partner are experiencing a period of high stress. Your baby may find the new routines strange at first but, with persistence and your gentle reassurance, he will develop better sleeping patterns.

TIP!

Make sure that your partner/ support person thoroughly understands the technique and is up to the task, as there's no quicker way to undo your best efforts than a whispered argument at 3am about whether or not you should pick up your crying baby.

REMEMBER!

Consistency is the key to success. Decide on the settling strategy you want to undertake before you begin and understand that it may take a couple of days before you begin to see the results.
