How to photograph newborns

Your baby will grow and change so much, and in the first few months you'll see changes every single day. So what better way to hold onto your precious memories than through photographs? However, photographing your newborn baby can be a challenge - which is why we've put together some tips:

Make it natural

Natural lighting is best when it comes to taking beautiful photos of your baby. You don't want harsh sunlight, just a gentle glow that doesn't cast a shadow. This way you'll also avoid flash photography and the dreaded red-eye!

Perfect props

When it comes to props there's no better than mum and dad. The contrast of your hand, against your baby's tiny little one is just gorgeous. Keep it simple and focus on the start of the show - your baby.

Get in close

It's the little things that make your baby so very beautiful. Set your camera on the macro setting and focus on those gorgeous rosebud lips, or those adorable little feet.

Dressing up, or down

Take a variety of photos at different times - some in your favourite outfits - some with your baby without. That baby skin is worth highlighting, just be sure you've got a nappy and a towel nearby, just in case...

The best timing

Make sure that your baby is well fed, and well rested before taking photos - although a sleeping baby shot is ever-so-cute. If baby's not in the mood, be prepared to move on and schedule the shoot for another day. However, sometimes it's the unexpected that makes the best photo - a big yawn, a sly side-eye - capture all sides of your baby's gorgeous personality.

The ideal background

An all-white background is ideal as not only does it make your baby look super-angelic, it helps reflect light on your baby for the photo. Keep it simple, a white sheet or blanket spread out on the floor works well as a baby studio.

Size matters

Highlight the teeny-tiny size of your baby by including props that show just how small your baby is. It could be a special teddy, toy - or even a tape measure. Think outside the square and use the internet for inspiration and you'll have albums-full of photos to look back on with love.

Snap away

The joy of digital photography is that you're only limited by the size of your camera's memory - so snap away. The more photos you take the better chance you have of finding the ideal photo of your bub.
