Baby Safety Out and about

Baby Safety Out and about

It is important to be aware of your baby's safety when out and about shopping, visiting friends or even going to the local park.

A few common issues to consider include:

If travelling in a car, make sure your child is correctly restrained in a Standards Australia approved child restraint on every trip, no matter how close the destination.

Never leave your child alone in the car for any period of time, no matter what the weather. Cars quickly become too hot for small children, even in mild weather.

Make it a habit to always get your child out of the car on the footpath side.

Supervise your child on playground equipment and choose equipment that is appropriate for their age and level of development.

Be aware of potential risks such as unguarded pools when visiting friends.

Take care when opening and shutting car doors and with hinges on prams and strollers - little fingers can become easily trapped.

Young children often get medicines or small objects out of handbags, backpacks or shopping bags (left on the ground or a chair) which can be swallowed or choked on. Keep carry bags and handbags out of reach and remind grandparents to do this as well.

Always use a harness in the pram/stroller or supermarket trolley and adjust the straps to fit your child every time.
