The following is a step by step description of how to massage your baby. This is an example of one method only. It may be different from what you have been shown, or have read about. You can make your baby's massage session go through all these steps in order, or only do some steps, or mix up the order in which you do them. (Not many young babies will tolerate a full massage.) You can modify and adjust it to suit your baby.
Remember to make sure the room is draught free and warm. Rub your hands together if they are cold. Take off any jewellery that could hurt your baby, wash your hands and have everything you need within reach.
Your baby may already be completely naked, if they have come straight out of a bath, or you may need to strip them (partially or fully) for the massage. Depending on the time of year, and how they are feeling about being naked, you may wish to cover parts of their body with a towel.
Some parents will undress their baby as they go, or simply massage their feet, legs hands and arms, until they are ready for a full massage. Your baby may feel better if their singlet is left on. You can run your hands underneath this to massage their back, chest and stomach. A long massage may take up to 10 to 20 minutes. A short massage may be only 5 few minutes. Depending on what you do and how long you spend on each movement.
You can begin by massaging your baby's feet and legs. Many babies are familiar with having this area touched and stroked from regular nappy changing. The following is one of the more common ways you can massage your baby massage.
