Things to consider in transition

Things to consider in transition

Transition can be a challenging phase for most women. At times it can take immense effort to change positions, or even talk. The woman's support team can become crucial at this point. Some women will be quiet during transition, going 'inward', not feeling they can talk. Others will start swearing, screaming or yelling - so if you do this, you won't be the first, nor the last (and your caregivers have heard it all before, and worse!)

One of the concerns many women have about 'transition' is the proclamation by well-meaning books that it is the 'hardest time' in the labour, and from there on in it becomes easier. The interpretation of this 'hardness' may relate to the physical challenge of the pain, or the psychological challenge of dealing with the labour. This may be true for some women, but others may not notice transition, finding the 2nd stage, (or pushing their baby out), the most challenging. Others will reflect on prelabour as being the hardest phase, because it went on for days and days.

Your labour in its entirety will be unique to you, in the way it will grow and intensify. Your birth story will be different from all that you have heard, or will hear after the birth. It may challenge you once, or several times. It will bring different challenges as compared to a previous labour.
