Lifestyle choices and exercises

There are many things that pregnant women find useful for helping with backache. These include:

Maintaining a good posture
Pelvic tilt exercises
Pelvic rocking
Shoulder rotation exercises
Using proper lifting techniques
Working at levels that are a comfortable height
Holding heavy objects close to your body
Keeping your neck, back and hips in as straight a line as possible when sitting for long periods
Avoiding slumping postures
Sleeping with pillows between your legs and supporting your back

If your pelvis is tilted backwards rather than forwards you will be able to reduce the curve in your lower back. Tucking your bottom under and trying to keep your body in straight alignment can achieve this.

Wearing low or flat-heeled shoes with good support will help you to cope with the shift in your centre of gravity and avoid tilting your pelvis further forward. If you are used to wearing high heels you may feel tightness in your claves for a while until these muscles adjust. Massage and stretching may help.
