Anterior lip points

Anterior lip points

The anterior section of the cervix is nearly always the last part of the woman's cervix to be finally taken up into the lower segment of the uterus, (before the baby is able to be pushed by the woman in the 2nd stage). An anterior lip occurs when the top of the cervix swells (like a 'fat lip'), but the rest of the cervix has completely dilated. This can slow the woman's progress and give her an urge to push, before her body is ready. You can read more in anterior lip.

Some women will use acupressure points to help the anterior lip be reduced and dilate. The women assuming a 'head down, bottom up' position can also take some of the pressure off the cervix, allowing it to pull completely open.

These points include the:

Buttock points (BL 32)

The buttock point lies just above the buttocks, one finger width either side of the spine. It does not matter which side you use. When the person feels this point with their finger, they should be able to feel a small depression where the point lies. Many labouring woman will direct the person performing the acupressure, because when the thumbs are in the correct place they usually 'feel right'.

The person will usually apply strong pressure with their knuckles during a contraction. The person may also pant with her, to help her resist the urge to push. The panting needs to be slow, so she does not hyperventilate. The panting can be similar to blowing out a candle.

Hand point (LI 4)

The hand point is aimed at 'letting go' (both physically and emotionally), and is believed to have a direct effect on opening the cervix, allowing it to fully dilate. The partner or support person may locate the hand point by asking the woman to bring her index finger and thumb together, to form a crease.
