Emotions that may be experienced in the resting phase
Most women, but not all, will experience a resting phase, or 'lull', as they move from the end of the active 1st stage of their labour (or the transitional phase) into the 2nd stage (or pushing phase) of their labour.
This is when the woman's cervix is fully dilated (about 10 cms), but her urge to push, or to 'bear down', is not yet felt. Some women experience mild contractions at this time, while for others, the contractions fade away (or even stop completely) for a short period.
Women usually feel relieved at this time, enjoying the break after the intense contractions of transition (which can often leave you feeling exhausted). Although, many women (and their partners) will voice concerns, asking their caregiver "Is everything OK? It has all suddenly stopped!" The calm before the storm.......?
